Ice Time Update: How We’re Expanding Access for Every Junior Polar Bear

Midcoast Youth Hockey is investing in more, better-structured ice time for all divisions this season. Over the summer, we signed an agreement with The Colisée (Lewiston) to expand access for our rapidly growing program. While we continue to secure time at Sidney J. Watson Arena, campus demand makes that challenging. Until progress on a public-access arena in the Brunswick/Topsham area becomes real (we’re working on it), Colisée ice gives our players the reps they need to develop.

6U: More Reps, Smart Balance

We’re proud to offer more ice than peer programs at 6U because early, consistent touches translate to long-term skating gains. We’re also calibrating volume to avoid burnout, pairing ample opportunity with appropriate rest.

8U: Big Numbers, Small Groups

Our 8U division is large—and that’s a great problem. To keep development personal and fun, we’re:

  • Splitting into smaller groups whenever possible (two practice blocks)
  • Rotating the 7:00 AM Watson slot to share access fairly
  • Monitoring attendance closely across weeknights at Colisée and weekend blocks
  • This weekend: ~80% participation (thank you!). If we see consistent light turnout at or beyond the remaining 20%, we may consolidate to a single sheet to maximize quality.

Action: Please RSVP in SportsEngine so coaches can plan stations and staffing.

10U/12U/14U Tier 4: Game-Speed Learning

Older age groups will notice a significant uptick in activity designed for real game situations:

  • Full-ice practices to work breakouts, D-zone transitions, and special teams
  • Cross-age Skills Sessions (added time beyond team practices) focused on puck handling, shooting, edge work, and decision-making
  • Example: our recent 10U/12U session used five fast-moving stations to keep players constantly engaged
  • When a skills session follows your team’s practice, team practice is the priority—participate in both only if it makes sense for your player that night
  • Enhanced Dryland at Coastal Performance (Brunswick) with professional trainers, including a former USA Women’s Hockey S&C Director and a former high school coach
  • Teams will rotate monthly for age-appropriate strength, mobility, and conditioning that shows up in games

Scheduling Notes

Access to Watson is still being finalized in some later windows, and a few December conflicts remain in flux. Thank you for your patience as we prioritize Watson access, league games, and tournaments. We all know the shirt: “Can’t. We have hockey.” Sometimes it’s true—thanks for the grace as the calendar settles.

Our Philosophy: Person First, Player Second

Everything we’re building—ice time, skills, dryland—is about confidence, fun, and growth. For many players, success means Tier 4 with friends through middle school. For others, it’s travel or eventually high school hockey. We’re designing paths for all skill levels, including options that deliver a travel-like experience for players working toward that next step.

What We Need From You

  • RSVP in SportsEngine for every session
  • Communicate conflicts or illness early
  • Ask questions—we’re here to help

Thanks for being all-in for your players and for Midcoast. If you have questions about schedules, skills, or dryland, please reach out. Let’s have a great season, Junior Polar Bears!
